Technology is constantly evolving in the race to achieve the ultimate in speed and convenience. While recent
years have seen great leaps in business technology, some industries have fallen behind. The banking industry,
for example, seems to still operate in an ocean of paper. Electronic bank statements, ATMs, and credit cards
have certainly revolutionized the industry, but processes such as opening new accounts still seem to take ages.
That's where the ID scanner comes in handy.
The ID scanner is the latest in a series of identity verification advances. By operating with Optical Character
Recognition (OCR) technology, the ID scanner scans and stores images from IDs. This information includes photos,
signatures, text information, and barcodes. These scanned images are then translated into a text file, which is
automatically sent to the user's corresponding database application. While this may sound complicated, users
should not be intimidated -- the machine does all of the hard work. The operation of the technology is actually
quite simple for the user. Depending on the ID scanner model, the user either places an ID on the scanning
device, or slides it along a narrow opening (much like a credit card reader at a grocery store). From this
point, the reader takes over. These OCR readers can process IDs from passports to driver's licenses within
seconds.
Here's an example of how the technology works. When you enter a bank to open a new account, the clerk asks
you for a form of ID. Ten years ago, the clerk would have taken your driver's license and manually entered
each piece of information into a computer form. This would not happen just once, but multiple times throughout
the process where your name, ID number, or address was needed. Fast forward to today. The clerk takes your
driver's license and quickly swipes it through the ID scanner. Two seconds later, the reader is sending the
information to her database. Instead of manually entering each field, the reader is doing the job for her.
Your name appears automatically in the name field, and so on. Not only is the technology fast, but it is
incredibly accurate. Unlike the manual entry, the OCR technology makes no spelling mistakes. Even your
signature and photo are uploaded into the database, making your account more secure. Now, instead of
taking forty-five minutes, you have a new account within fifteen minutes.
The ID scanner seamlessly blends complex technology and an easy-to-use format. By making data entry and storage fast,
easy, and convenient, it perfectly suits the banking industry's evolution. It's economical and ergonomic format
make it both a time and a money saver. It’s advanced technology that works for you.
